Sam Fender has given the full amount of his £25k award cash to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the Britain's small music venues.

Fender was awarded the award on 16 October as his new release People Watching was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has opted to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages had in his initial steps.

"I personally would not have achieved what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," remarked Fender. "These locations are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – about 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, well-known musicians like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its initiatives to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

He also participated, generating over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to help 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

The donation supported locations that were dealing with possible closure due to difficulties arising from floods, blazes and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues were granted monetary aid in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that helped musicians and concertgoers.

"The concept that money from performances in big venues helps the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just common sense," the star has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize winnings to good deeds.

In the band earned the trophy in 1996 for their album the album, lead singer Cocker announced that the act would contribute their prize money to the charity War Child.

During 2002, musician Ms Dynamite shared her bounty across several charities, such as the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required updated gear," she told the media.

Two years ago, they gave their funds to the community center that supported their group, as well as other independent music bodies.

Additionally the 1994 recipients they donated their award to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the disease.

"Winning was sufficient," remarked vocalist Small. "The prize was the extra but we could do without the bonus, because we had the cake. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Last week, the trust announced it had protected two local spots in that region, by bringing them into local control.

One venue in the city and the second in the city were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by Arts Council England and music fans who acquire "ownership units" in the venues.
