The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
